New Program Co-director
Sheri Mizumori has accepted the position of Chair of the Department of Psychology and consequently, has resigned from the position of Co-director of the Neurobiology & Behavior Program.  We will continue to benefit from Sheri's leadership, however, as she has become a member of the Program's Steering Committee. The Steering Committee has chosen Sheri's replacement.  The name of that individual has not been officially announced, since the required approval by the Dean of the Graduate School is pending.  However, the name of this individual is a poorly kept secret, and we couldn't be more pleased with the selection.  Stay tuned here for the formal introduction of our new co-director.

Students and Faculty in the Spotlight this month
The February edition of the UW Graduate School eNews and this weeks edition of the UW Faculty and Staff Newspaper highlight the accomplishments of Neurobiology & Behavior students in the Neurobiology & Behavior Community Outreach organization.

Of course, the Program's faculty haven't been hiding their talents under a basket either.  Bill Zagota received the 2008 Kenneth S. Cole Award of the Biophysical Society.  Adrienne Fairhall is featured in the current edition of the UW Faculty and Staff Newspaper.
N&B Faculty in the News
The community outreach activities of N&B Program students and faculty have recently received favorable attention.

N&B students Bryan White and Hiro Watari, and former N&B student Jonathin Ting are featured in the most recent Neuroscience Quarterly of the Society for Neuroscience.

N&B faculty member Eric Chudler was featured in an interview on KUOW.

Please welcome visiting applicants
This year the Neurobiology & Behavior Admissions Committee reviewed 163 applications and has invited 24 applicants to visit the Program for interviews in the coming week.  23 students accepted this invitation, and will be visiting us Jan. 24 and Jan. 25 of this coming week.  This looks like another outstanding group of applicants.  Please help make them feel welcome.

Community
As Sheri Mizumori and I began our tenure as co-directors of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neurobiology & Behavior, one thing that we agreed on was that major goals would be to increase the sense of community among neuroscientists of the University of Washington, and to increase the interaction of UW neuroscientists with the public outside of the UW.

Thus, it is with exceptional pleasure that we note that three N&B Program graduate students, Jonathan Ting, Hirofumi Watari, and Bryan White, have been selected as the recipients of the SfN Next Generation Award for pre/postdoctoral fellows.  They are the first group to be honored with this new award.  The award is for their work in the Neurobiology & Behavior Community Outreach Organization. The award will be presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience prior to the Presidential Special Lecture on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 5:15 p.m. in Ballroom 20 of the San Diego Convention Center.
